Exclusively for queer and trans families (bi and pan families welcome!) this course is based on our Roots of Birth program, with additions for the unique needs of queer families. Taught by queer doulas and available as a weekend intensive or a 6-week series.

Our Topics:

Module 1 = The science of labour and stages of labour; What to expect from natural childbirth

Module 2 = The impact of conception on birth; Medical technologies of birth (including induction of labour, pain management, monitoring, and risk management); Birth planning and advocacy for queer families

Module 3 = Medical technologies of birth (including Cesarean, assisted delivery, and emergency situations); Mental preparation for birth by breaking the Fear / Tension / Pain cycle

Module 4 = Hands on practice with comfort tools for labour and positions; Counter pressure practice; Pushing positions

Module 5 = Newborn procedures immediately post birth; Postpartum healing; The first days with a newborn; Chosen family support

Module 6 = What to expect from your newborn; Infant sleep; Infant feeding, including breastfeeding / body feeding, pumping, formula feeding, bottles, and combinations feeding; Hands on practice with diaper changes, swaddling, and burping

For Weekend Intensives:

  • Saturdays are 10 am - 5 pm

  • Sundays are 10 am - 2 pm

  • One hour of lunch break is provided each day, as well as small breaks throughout

  • Food and drink is not provided
